Dental Implants: An Introduction

September 22, 2014Dr. Seth LarsonDental Implants

Implant-BreakdownDental implants are a teeth replacement solution that not only restores your smile, but it also will aid in promoting overall oral health. Dental implants are unique because it utilizes the process of osseointegration which naturally combines the titanium implant to the bone tissue in the jaw. Osseointegration was first discovered by a swedish orthopedic surgeon named Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who is considered the father of modern dental implantology.  He discovered this process by first experimenting on a rabbit by inserting titanium chambers to study its blood flow.  When he attempted to remove the titanium material, the titanium had integrated together with the bone tissue, and became a part of the rabbits anatomy.  This concept was then implemented into dental implants and has been successfully replacing missing teeth permanently and providing patients with added benefits such as healthy jaws, gums, and overall oral health.

What Can Dental Implants Do For You?

Dental implants can provide many benefits that can help aid different oral ailments such as replacing severely decayed teeth.  It restores an infected area by clearing the decay and replacing it with a durable titanium implant, that will solidify the jaw and promote it to heal and become more strong. Durability and assurance of dental implants allows for patients to engage in thier normal lifestyle without having restrictions of eating certain foods.  In some cases face shape can also be improved in those who have experienced a caved in appearance, due to the absence and shifting of teeth.  Dental implants also cannot develop tooth decay, which further ensures it longevity of use. One of the most desirable features that is provided to patients is its natural looking appearance.  Unlike other methods, dental implants are designed to function as real teeth that will allow patients to punctuate thier words better and will keep other teeth in place.  It is important to maintain oral hygiene to ensure that  your dental implants will serve you more effectively, but also to prevent other teeth from becoming decayed.
